The author uses Melinda to tell us what day it is, what is happening, and how she is feeling. Everything we know is known through Melinda, so the author uses first person for characters, plot, and setting.
I have to agree with Jennie that the author more or less directly tells us the setting and characters through Melinda. We are able to know exactly what is going on the whole time and where we are in the story.
The author uses first person to creat the world that Melinda sees. Melinda directly tells us whats happening, but allso we can infer alot through tshe comments of others.
